I’m sitting in my high-school chemistry class, and my teacher, a white man, wanting me to state my answer to a problem, calls out some heinous mispronunciation of my phonetically-spelled Arabic surname. I correct him, my cheeks flushing. My classmates, mostly white, smirk. He makes the same mistake again, moments later. I correct him again. That was his response.
I am so, so sorry that my name is more important to me than some easy-ass worksheet.
things that are absolutley never ok to say to anyone, let alone as a teacher in a position of authority. damn.
